Sclerotherapy is done in the case of spider veins or varicose veins; a single session of Sclerotherapy lasts for approximately 30-40 minutes.

Once in the clinic, the doctor asks the patient to lie down, and if the treatment has to be carried out on legs, the patient is supposed to wear shorts, or the patient has to remove the jeans or pants he is wearing before the doctor starts with the treatment.

Treatment starts with imaging of the affected area, and the patient is asked to lie down on the bed, followed by disinfecting the affected area using an antiseptic solution. The physician then begins to inject the sclerosing agent into the affected veins. For better visualization of veins, magnification along with polarized halogen lights are used.

One session includes 15-20 injections, and each injection is used for one inch of spider vein. Once the procedure is done, a cotton ball along with compression tapes are placed in the particular areas of the leg.

Few patients with claustrophobia or anxiety issues are given sedatives to keep calm during the procedure. The physicians keep talking to them or asking general questions to distract their minds from the treatment, so they don’t feel anxious about the therapy.

Even music, reading, or talking could keep the patient distracted and not get anxious.

With the treatment ongoing, the patient feels sensations of the fine needle being poked, resulting in a slight burning sensation. But the needle is so thin, and the sclerosing agent is so mild the pain is easily bearable, and once the treatment is done, the patient can start walking then and there.

The success of this therapy depends upon the physical or the medical nurse performing the procedure. Once the procedure is completed and the blood has been rerouted to healthier veins, the affected area that had been treated will never be affected again, depending on the performing doctor. So to have an assured treatment, it is necessary to choose a dependable and competent physician to carry out the procedure without having any future complications.
