If you’ve ever dreamed of adventure and conquering your own limitations, you need to get out a try a hike.
Are you getting a little tired of the same old hikes? Do you keep going on hikes that end up underwhelming you?
You need this list of the best hiking trips around the world. Each offers a unique opportunity to experience natural world views, cultures, and challenges. Although some of them are difficult, they are all worth it in the end. Here are some of our favorite hikes around the world.
1. Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the most famous mountains in the world. It’s one of those places that if you tell someone you’ve hiked it, they’ll immediately be impressed.
Don’t worry. That doesn’t mean it’s overrated. It’s still one of the most spectacular hikes in the world.
It’s the tallest mountain in the continent of Africa, so don’t go in expecting an easy hike. You’ll absolutely need a guide to do it not only because it’s the Tanzania law but because it’s too hard to do it alone. You’ll experience long uphills, rocky terrains, and possible altitude sickness.
Despite the challenges, the hike is worth it for two reasons. Number one, it very well might be the hardest thing you’ll ever do. In times of doubt in your future, you can remind yourself how you pulled through on that hike.
Second, once you reach the top, you’ll experience the natural beauty of Tanzania in a way you never could have dreamed of before. Wake up the morning after reaching the summit to see the most beautiful sunrise of your life.
2. Halema’uma’u Trail, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park
How many opportunities will you have in your life to see a real, active volcano? Take the opportunity as it comes and hike the Halema’uma’u Trail in Hawaii. It’s one of the best hiking trips in USA.
This well-worn and loved trail has been used since 1846. Many people enjoy it because of its moderate difficulty. It’s only 1.8 miles roundtrip through the restored rainforest, and the first half of the hike is mostly descending. At leisure, it should take about an hour. Don’t rush it though, enjoy the sights and sounds that the rainforest has to offer.
3. Half Dome Day Hike, Yosemite National Park
The Half Dome hike in Yosemite is so unique, challenging, and popular that you need to acquire a permit to hike it. The dome rises 5,000 feet above the rest of Yosemite National Park, so it offers a view like no other.
However, be prepared that the final part of the trek includes a cable route. For this reason, you need to include boots with a good tread on your hiking trip packing list. It’s so mountainous that it may remind you of some Colorado hiking trips.
The hike is about 16 miles round trip and requires hikers to be in great shape for the length and elevation. Don’t worry, though. It isn’t a hike with 16 miles of nothing and a view at the end. There are amazing sights all along the way. It takes about 12 hours to complete the entire hike.
4. The Israel National Trail, Israel
The Israel National Trail stretches through the entirety of Israel. While it’s perhaps unlikely that you’ll choose to hike the whole thing in your lifetime, there are portions that are must-see hiking experiences. If you do decide to do the whole thing, it will take about 50 days.
During the spring, you’ll get to see many native flowers blooming in this holy and ancient land. The terrain is varied with massive flats, some serious climbing, and even stretches of beaches. You’ll discover every kind of environment that Israel has to offer: all on one trail!
If you want more advice for hiking this trail, get your hands on a copy of the Red Book. It’s an Israel National Trail guide written in English.
5. Markha Valley Trek, Ladakh, India
If you’ve ever dreamed of hiking through India or Tibet, the Markha Valley Trek is for you. It isn’t guaranteed that you’ll reach enlightenment, but you will get to experience some of the most fantastic beauty the world has to offer.
One of the great benefits of this hike is that there are homestays along the way. You can stay in a house or rent a tent every night to avoid having to pack a tent in your backpack. By staying in a home, you can experience Buddhist culture alongside your experience of the beautiful Himalayan views.
6. The Snowman Trek, Bhutan
This Himalayan hike is both challenging and rewarding. While most of the hikes on this list feature one high peak, the Snowman Trek crosses 11 high peaks all with unique and beautiful views. You’ll also experience the wonder of high-altitude lakes.
This hike is not for the weak-hearted though. It is one of the hardest hikes in the Himalayas.
This is also a good hike for people who like to combine cultural experiences with their nature views. You’ll hike through small Tibetan towns and Buddhist monasteries where you’ll get to see the true beauty of that unique culture.
