Why Concealed Firearm Training is Important

A concealed firearm is one that is carried close to your body. This could be under a jacket close to your ribcage, around your waist or under the trousers on your foot. Despite of where you choose to conceal your firearm, if you do not know how to handle and operate it, it could pose a danger to you and those around you.

Like in most states, cpl training in Michigan is mandatory before one is allowed to carry or handle firearms. Here are some advantages of concealed firearms training.

A Prerequisite Requirement by the Government

The state government of Michigan requires one to have a CPL (concealed weapon license) from a licensed trainer before owning or keeping a gun. To apply for a CPL in Michigan, the law requires an individual to:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Have proper national identification documents
  • Have knowledge about the safety and proper handling of a pistol by completing a pistol training course

Preventing ‘Accidental’ Gun Discharge

Contrary to what many people believe, accidental discharge of a gun mostly occurs due to negligence rather than by accident. Lack of prior knowledge about gun safety and handling puts everyone at risk. When the gun is not in use, it should always be holstered with its safety on.

After drawing, the firing finger should be put away from the trigger unless ready to shoot. Most ‘accidental’ firings happen due to panic and tension when the finger is resting on the trigger. You should not aim a loaded gun to anything you do not intend to shoot at.

Improving Competency and Accuracy

According to a report issued by the FBI Crime Reporting Program, most collateral killings during gang shootouts are as a result of stray bullets. As a gun owner, you are responsible for the bullet from the moment it’s in the cartridge to the moment it hits the intended target. Precision makes a competent shooter and thus reduces the chances of injuries and death to oneself or other people in the trajectory of the bullet.

Neutralizing Situations

People with adequate weaponry training are better equipped to turn down the heat of a situation rather than aggravate it. This is because training mimics real-life situations that helps the gun owner develop anger management and negotiation skills.

Proper Gun Storage and Maintenance

One has no need for a gun if it’s going to fail when they need it most. Firearms training allows the gun owner to learn assembly and disassembly of a gun, cleaning and proper storage (such as locking it in a safe rather than placing it on the table). Every gun is prone to jamming or misfiring if not properly maintained.

Familiarizing with Guns

The training in firearms usage begins with understanding the various types of guns, the proper caliber match, power, range, and different utilities. It would prove to be catastrophic if one were to use the wrong caliber bullet in the riffle. Knowing your weapon is crucial to ensure safe and proper usage.

Understanding Different Laws Governing Guns Handling

Guns are essential tools in the right hands but deadly weapons when mishandled. The Government has put strict laws to govern the sale, issuing and licensing of guns. A CPL is a must-have if one wants to possess a gun and failure to adhere to these regulations can attract a jail sentence. It is advisable to avoid intentional violation of these laws.

Educating the General Public

Our community is changing rapidly, and access to firearms is becoming easier day by day. Be it from local dealers to the dark web, we cannot deny that society needs education on the impacts of having guns in their possession. Training people on responsible handling, usage, storage, and maintenance of firearms helps somewhat control ethics and morals.

Conclusion

The most important aspect of gun handling is safety. If proper safety measures are not put in place, it could result in fatal injuries in case of an ‘accidental’ discharge.

Firearm training is not just about loading and shooting. Proper training aims to create a responsible firearm user. Safety starts with understanding your firearm and the effects it has on you and the people around you.
